Uncanny X-Men (Vol 1) #129: God Spare the Child...

With Proteus taken care of, the X-Men bid Moira, Sean, Alex, Lorna and Jamie farewell and return home.

On the Blackbird, Phoenix’s thoughts are suddenly manipulated by Jason Wyngarde and she is transported again into the 18th century. Consciously, she pushes herself out of Jason’s embrace and is met on the deck of the ship by the captain, whom she recognises to be this century’s version of Scott.

She is drawn out of her dream state by Cyclops, who wishes to have a word with Phoenix. When he believed Phoenix to be dead, he had spend a lot of time thinking about the loved ones he had lost, and he could not bear losing her the most. He had refused to grief for her because it would have destroyed him.

Cyclops: “Jean, you’re everything to me -- as necessary as the air I breathe. I used to say ‘I love you’ without truly knowing what I was talking about. I know now -- a little, anyway. Jean -- I love you.”
Phoenix: “And I. You, Scott. With all my heart.”

When the X-Men return to the mansion to find Xavier waiting for them.

The next few days, Scott and Jean enjoy each other’s company. Scott is secretly worried about Jean’s powers. Scott soon discovers more animosity brewing. Xavier has been pushing the X-Men harder as he feels that Scott hasn’t been a good enough leader to properly guide the team and it is time to take the X-Men back under his wing.

When the first sign of trouble is detected, Xavier sends Scott and Jean off to check out the contact in New York while Xavier takes charge of the rest of the team so he can access them at the same time.

The contacts have been sent out by the Hellfire Club to lure the X-Men out.

In Chicago, Cerebro has discovered a new mutant: Kitty Pryde. Xavier, Storm, Colossus and Wolverine pay Kitty a visit, as does a Ms Frost. While Xavier converses with Kitty’s parents to convince her to join his “School for Gifted Youngsters”, Storm attempts to befriend Kitty over ice cream. Wolverine and Colossus watch over Kitty as well, when masked and armoured men barge into the store and attack them. The X-Men take out their attackers easily, but are then assaulted telepathically by the Hellfire Club’s White Queen. The X-Men are taken aboard a hovercraft, and Kitty stows aboard. She immediately recognises the White Queen to be Ms Frost.
