Uncanny X-Men (Vol 1) #126: How Sharper Than a Serpent’s Tooth...!

The X-Men rush to Muir Island after Lorna’s call for help. They find Lorna unconscious and in a state of shock, and the mummified body of an enemy of the X-Men. The X-Men split up and scout the area for Moira and the rest of the mutants living with her. Colossus and Nightcrawler find Havok and Multiple Man while Cyclops and Storm find Moira and Phoenix. While Phoenix briefly stirs from her shocked state, she accidentally calls Cyclops “Jason” before sinking back into an unconscious state. Cyclops is confused.

The attacker is known as “Mutant X”, and was imprisoned in a holding cell in the research facility until his escape. Moira reveals to Cyclops that Mutant X is her son, and that is why his files are classified.

Mutant X is on the loose, assuming host after host while the X-Men put together a plan to try to track him down.

Storm and Phoenix do an airborne search while the rest proceed by car. With some private moments to herself, Phoenix reflects on her conflicting emotions, feeling that she and Cyclops have changed, as well as their relationship. Suddenly, Phoenix finds herself transported back into the 18th century with the mysterious Jason Wyngarde. The dream ends as abruptly as it began, and Phoenix finds another petrified body with the signature of Mutant X.

Back on the ground, Wolverine has found Mutant X, disguised as a police officer. “Mutant X” calls himself “Proteus”, and using his powers, creates illusions that render Wolverine and Nightcrawler helpless. Storm comes to her team mates’ aid, but fear that even her powers are not able to stop Proteus.
